Debunking Asthma Myths

When asthma takes your breath away, you reach for your inhaler. This can happen anywhere at any time and often people around will ask you about it.  Telling them you have asthma may put you in an uncomfortable situation. They may start asking questions and giving you tons of advice based on misconceptions about the condition. When this happens, share this blog with them.

We’ve compiled common asthma myths and facts everyone should know.

  1. Myth: It’s all in your head
    Fact: Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the airways; therefore, it is not a psychological disorder. Asthma causes the lungs and immune system to overreact to certain triggers which may vary from person to person.
  2. Myth: If you have asthma, you shouldn’t exercise
    Fact: Controlled physical activity will help you make your lungs more resilient and help you lead a healthier and normal life. Additionally, regular exercise will also help you prevent obesity, which can make asthma more difficult to control.
  1. Myth: It’s okay, you will outgrow asthma
    Fact: Asthma symptoms may change over time but it’s a lifelong condition. Asthma may improve based on environmental changes or even changes the body goes through as it ages. However, symptoms can return at any point in time.

The exact causes of asthma are not yet known but clinical trials are being conducted to offer new and advanced treatment options not yet available to the public.
